The History of Arsenal Managers

From Herbert Chapman to Mikel Arteta

Herbert Chapman

Considered one of the greatest managers in Arsenal's history, Herbert Chapman joined the club in 1925. Under his guidance, Arsenal won the First Division title in 1930 and 1931, and the FA Cup in 1930. Chapman's innovative tactics and training methods revolutionized the game of football, and he is credited with creating the "WM" formation, which became the standard for decades to come.

George Allison

After Chapman's untimely death in 1934, George Allison took over as manager. Allison continued Chapman's legacy of success, winning the First Division title in 1934-35 and 1937-38, and the FA Cup in 1936. Allison also led Arsenal to their first European trophy, the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, in 1960.

Arsène Wenger

The most successful manager in Arsenal's history, Arsène Wenger joined the club in 1996. Wenger transformed Arsenal into one of the most dominant teams in England, winning three Premier League titles (1998, 2002, 2004), seven FA Cups (1998, 2002, 2003, 2005, 2009, 2014, 2015), and the UEFA Champions League in 2006. Wenger's attacking style of play and commitment to youth development left a lasting legacy on the club.

Mikel Arteta

Mikel Arteta took over as manager in 2019 after a brief spell as caretaker following the departure of Unai Emery. Arteta's first season was challenging, with Arsenal finishing eighth in the Premier League. However, he led the club to FA Cup success in 2020, and in 2022-23, he guided Arsenal to their first Premier League title in 19 years.
