The Senate on Wednesday dismissed the first of two articles of impeachment against Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. The Republican-controlled House impeached Mayorkas in February. The senators voted 51-48 against considering the first article of impeachment, which alleged that Mayorkas had failed to secure the border.
The Mayorkas impeachment trial will kick off at 1 pm on Tuesday, April 17, 2024. All 100 senators will be sworn in as jurors in Mayorkas' impeachment trial.
The Senate clash over the impeachment of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas lasted less than three hours. On January 28, 2024, House Republicans indicated their intention to move forward with two articles of impeachment against Mayorkas, alleging that he had failed to secure the border and that he had violated federal law by issuing a directive that halted the construction of a border wall.
